My name is David Palomo and I want to
tell you the story about why I founded The Studio Hope Project. When I was studying for my
master’s degree in counseling psychology, I spent an internship
working with emotionally disturbed children ages 8-13. As an amateur musician, I
found that my digital four track recorder became a valuable tool in
my work with these children.
Not only did the kids enjoy playing with music in the studio,
the ability to make voices echo or sound like Darth Vader or like
chipmunks opened the door for some great storytelling by the
students. As I explored
further, I discovered that the digital revolution has made music available to
children of all ages and developmental levels in new and exciting
ways. Easy to use software programs make it possible to work with
children to create high quality sounding compositions from clips of
professionally pre-recorded music. This medium provides kids an
experience of making creative, positive choices when working with
limitations. It
provides a powerful medium for children and adolescents to develop
positive values in dealing with challenging life problems. After seeing the way studio
work helped troubled kids learn to make better choices and develop
positive values, I founded Studio
Hope.
About David Palomo
David Palomo founded the Studio Hope Project
after seeing the power of digital music production in his work with
emotionally challenged children in programs at Child Guidance Center and Family Solutions in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He is a writer and amateur
musician and holds a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from
Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California. Formerly he was an Order
Book Official on the Options Trading Floor of the Pacific Stock
Exchange in San
Francisco, where he also was trained in
improvisational theater games at The Next Stage Theater. After a lengthy illness in
which music played an important part in his recovery, he returned to
school at Pacifica and founded the Studio
Hope Project, a non-profit foundation under the auspices of
the Congressional
Districst Programs.
